A Modern Day Holocaust?

A modern-day Holocaust is unfolding

Apr. 20, 2015 – 1:52 – There’s been another purported mass killing of Christians in the Middle East. It’s only a matter of time before the Islamic extremist savages target American churches.

nation.foxnews.com/2015/04/20/todd.starnes-modern-day-holocaust-unfolding

It is reported that ISIS has released a video showing the killing of Ethiopian Christians in Libya. Todd Starnes at Fox News warns we could be seeing “the beginning of a modern day Holocaust”.

In this latest horror unfolding in the Middle East it is hard to feel anything but anger and a desire for revenge, retribution an eye for an eye. What if the very thing that is meant for evil, is used for by God for good?  I had heard several years ago of missionaries, surrounded by secrecy, being trained to go into Muslim nations to share the gospel. With no expectation of returning, martyrs of a different kind. As I watched the video below I was reminded of those who have probably already given their lives to share the Good News. A perspective I have not considered, If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.” Matthew 16:25

The Adversary

be self-controlled and alert….

alert 1alert 1

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Satan, also known as the devil, the serpent, the dragon, occupies a small space in the story the Bible tells. This is as it should be because the Bible is not his story, but the accounts we have gives us insight and information about our enemy. In 1 Peter 5:8 he is called our adversary. An enemy or opponent. He is known by other names throughout the Bible, it is this name that most clearly defines his role

‏The name שָׂטָן ‎ śāṭān—is mentioned 19 times in the Old Testament, 14 times in the book of Job, the oldest book in the Bible. In this book we see satan, as an adversary of Job, attempting to discredit God’s assessment of Job’s character.

The name Σατάν Satan or Σατανᾶς Satanas—is mentioned 37 times in the New Testament. The most notable occurrences are when he attempts to persuade Jesus to follow in the steps of the first Adam in Matthew 4 and Mark 1, when he uses Peter, to try to persuade Jesus to avoid the cross in Matthew 16, and when he enters Judas in John 13:22-17 at the last supper, resulting in the betrayal of Jesus. In all of these accounts satan is clearly an enemy and opponent.

In the Hebrew and Greek definitions of his name, his adversarial nature is further revealed.

Hebrew: an opponent; especially (with the article prefixed) Satan, the arch-enemy of good :- adversary, Satan, one who withstands.—

Greek: the accuser, i.e. the devil —

accuser 4accuser 4

As I was driving to work this morning I was thinking about situations in my life, the lives of my family and my friends, and in our world where it is obvious the enemy is at work, opposing all that is good and the victories over him seem few and far between. In times like these he seems all to powerful. A fearsome adversary

But what power does he have in the world and over us? Scripture identifies two groups of people in the world. Those who are believers and for God and those who are unbelievers and against God. Satan’s power is contingent on which group people belong to.

Unbelievers

2 Corinthians 4:4 Satan is present in this world and has a major influence on the ideals, opinions, goals, hopes and views of the majority of people. He influences the world’s philosophies, education, and commerce. The thoughts, ideas, speculations and false religions of the world are under his control and have sprung from his lies and deceptions*
C.S. Lewis writes in Mere Christianity “This is a civil war, a rebellion, and we are living in a part of the universe occupied by the rebel. Enemy-occupied territory-that is what this world is”.**

Believers

It is important to note that Satan is a formidable enemy, to be sure, but in a personal sense, not as directly dangerous to us as the world and its temptations and our own human nature. Rarely does anyone encounter him directly, as he is very good at concealing himself, carrying out his work through humans and demons* Ephesians 6:12

Colossians 1:13 As believers we are no longer under the rule of Satan but we are vulnerable to the temptation of sin. This relegates his power over us to that which we give him when we choose to do so. Most of the enemies attacks against believers comes in the from of trials and trouble God allows. It is in these times we are most vulnerable to temptation.
Again in Mere Christianity C.S. Lewis follows up on the idea that a rebellion is in progress with this thought “Christianity is the story of how the rightful king has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us all to take part in a great campaign sabotage”.
Our calling is to undermine the work of the enemy and Jesus Christ himself has given us the authority to do so Luke 10:19

God is Sovereign and in His infinite wisdom, has allowed Satan to operate in this world within the boundaries God has set for him. This is a temporary arrangement with a definite end. In these last days as we see an increase in the work of the enemy, we must also understand that God is delaying judgement, because of His grace so everyone would have the opportunity to turn away from sin and turn to Him. 2 Peter 3:9

So we finish where we started taking note of the warning issued by the apostle Peter. 1 Peter 5:8

Be self-controlled : To be self controlled is to follow after the Spirit and not after our carnal appetites. This is the beginning work of the Spirit in every believer. It is also an ongoing battle. As we allow the Holy Spirit to produce this fruit in our lives Galatians 5:22 we are able to resist the attacks and temptations of the enemy

Be alert: Being spiritually alert and aware that”things are not what they seem”. Many believers are caught off-guard because they are spiritually lazy, neglecting prayer and studying the Word. We should especially be alert for false teachers that seek to present a false Gospel. The book of Jude 1 has a lot to say about this.

Resist him: Standing firm in the faith 1 Corinthians 16:13; 1Peter 5:9 even when it is not popular, even when it is counter-cultural. The popularity, tolerance, and acceptance that Christianity has enjoyed is fading fast in our post-modern world.
We face an enemy who is dangerous, and cunning, but he has been defeated!
God is Sovereign and will have the last word in everything!

A Place To Be

lake
This is from The Daily Bread.
In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. —John 14:2

A thousand strands of time, events, and people weave into a tapestry we call place. More than just a house, place is where meaning, belonging, and safety come together under the covering of our best efforts at unconditional love. Place beckons us with memories buried deep in our souls. Even when our place isn’t perfect, its hold on us is dramatic, magnetic.

The Bible speaks frequently of place. We see an example in Nehemiah’s longing for a restored Jerusalem (Neh. 1:3-4; 2:2). It’s no surprise, then, that Jesus would speak of place when He wants to comfort us. “Let not your heart be troubled,” He began. Then He added: “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:1-2).

For those who have fond memories of earthly places, this promise links us to something we can easily understand and look forward to. And for those whose places have been anything but comforting and safe, Jesus promises that one day they will hear the sweet song place sings, for they will inhabit it with Him.

Whatever the struggle, whatever the faltering on your faith journey, remember this: There’s a place in heaven already waiting, fitted just for you. Jesus wouldn’t have said so if it weren’t true.
Jesus, I can’t wait to live in the home You have prepared for me. Thank You that no matter what my earthly place holds, comfort or pain, my home with You will be so much better.
May the memory of our earthly place point us with hope to our heavenly place.
INSIGHT: Today’s passage contains a beautiful insight into what makes our future in heaven so wonderful. In verse 9, Nehemiah quotes Moses saying that God will bring His people into the place where His name dwells. It is God’s presence that makes our future worth waiting for.

Prayer For America

Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. 15 My eyes will be open and my ears attentive to every prayer made in this place.   2 Chronicles 7:13-15 Continue reading “Prayer For America”

Urgent Prayer For American Christian Missionary Captured In Nigeria

Prayers please!

I Am Not Ashamed Of The Gospel Of Christ!

nigeria christian school

(Voice of the Persecuted) Another Christian has been abducted in Nigeria, this time it is an American Missionary who pioneered several Christian Schools in the mostly Muslim part of the country.  Gunmen stormed the school and abducted her.  Nigeria through the evil Boko Haram has been a hotbed for abductions.  And it’s been said they have made millions in ransom payments.  The Christian girls from Chibok are still in captivity.  No one has claimed responsibility yet, but there are reports that a ransom has been requested in the amount of $300,000.

(Daily Mail) An American woman working as a Christian missionary in central Nigeria was kidnapped Monday morning, the website of the Free Methodist Church and a security source revealed on Tuesday.  ‘Early this morning we received a report that Reverend Phyllis Sortor, our missionary in Nigeria, was abducted from the Hope Academy compound in Emiworo, Kogi State, Nigeria…

Flawless

diamond 2 gospel coalition

He has made you flawless!

For it’s by God’s grace that you have been saved. You receive it through faith. It was not our plan or our effort. It is God’s gift, pure and simple. Ephesians 2:8

So what should we say about all of this? If God is on our side, then tell me: whom should we fear? Romans 8:31

I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Philippians 3:13

There are times when you come face to face with failure in your life, the inability to do what you know you should do. And you wonder if your life will ever be different and the voice that says “no this is who you are” is the loudest voice you hear.

You are not alone. And that is not who you are.

The good news is our life is no longer defined by our failures. And in our weakness we find strength because of what Jesus has done. And that is enough. The Scriptures above remind us of truth, about where we’ve been, where we are, and where we are going.

It was never about what we could do to be good enough to deserve His love

No matter how unworthy He alone has made you worthy. He loves you and He is for you!

Because of what Jesus did on the cross, the old you with its sinful ways is gone, a new you, and a new chapter has begun

No matter how hard or how difficult it is or may be no matter how many voices tell say “you can’t do this”, keep running the race. The One who began a good work in you will finish it and the best is yet to come.

He has made you flawless!

There’s got to be more
Than going back and forth
From doing right to doing wrong
‘Cause we were taught that’s who we are
Come on get in line right behind me
You along with everybody
Thinking there’s worth in what you do

Then Like a hero who takes the stage when
We’re on the edge of our seats saying it’s too late
Well let me introduce you to amazing grace

No matter the bumps
No matter the bruises
No matter the scars
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
No matter the hurt
Or how deep the wound is
No matter the pain
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless

Could it possibly be
That we simply can’t believe
That this unconditional
Kind of love would be enough
To take a filthy wretch like this
And wrap him up in righteousness
But that’s exactly what He did

No matter the bumps
No matter the bruises
No matter the scars
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
No matter the hurt
Or how deep the wound is
No matter the pain
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless

Take a breath smile and say
Right here right now I’m ok
Because the cross was enough

Then Like a hero who takes the stage when
We’re on the edge of our seats saying it’s too late
Well let me introduce you to grace grace
God’s grace

No matter the bumps
No matter the bruises
No matter the scars
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
No matter the hurt
Or how deep the wound is
No matter the pain
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless

No matter what they say
Or what you think you are
The day you called His name
He made you flawless
He made you flawless
